Drinks. Nibbles. Games.

In a world of three-word slogans, which political life in the UK has come to under the current PM, the above sums up yet another infamy perpetrated by those in power. The issue at hand is a Christmas party that took place on 18 December last year in No 10 Downing Street. Now, a little get-together among colleagues for a little festive cheer at this time of the year is not something that would usually raise eyebrows. The timing of this particular one, however, does.

BBC’s own Ros Atkins sums it all up perfectly: (the Twitter link)

Since the Mirror broke the story three days ago, Conservative ministers have started new careers as contortionists in front of press cameras and microphones. The common denominator is that “there wasn’t a party” and “those who were there followed the rules.” So, basically it was kinda like Schrödinger’s Party – both having happened and not having happened simultaneously, as that there wasn’t a party and those who where partying did so within the rules. At a time when the rest of the country was told to stay home. When you were not allowed to see anyone outside your own 2-3-4-person household, not even outside in the fresh air. When people died alone in hospitals and care homes because their families and loved ones were forbidden by law to see them one last time. 489 people died on 18 December of Covid19 in the UK, while these shitgibbons were boozing it up. By Christmas Day 2020, more than 70,000 in total had died of Covid19 in the UK since the pandemic started.

Then again, what do you expect from a Prime Minister who regards human life, i.e. the lives of those who live in this country, with such disdain and contempt that he can barely disguise it: “Let the bodies pile high in their thousands!” is a comment Johnson made and didn’t make in October last year when refusing to impose another lockdown. (Schrödinger is having a field day with this government.)

In every other democracy, in every other circumstance in every other country, those who participated in this shenanigan would hang their heads in shame and resign. But words & concepts like decency, integrity, accountability, personal responsibility are no longer in this Tory government’s dictionary, let alone in their conscience. If I were a Brit, I would be fucking ashamed to be represented and supposedly governed by such a row of degenerate excuses for human beings. As a European, I’m fucking glad I live in Scotland. It’s not perfect here, either, but I take imperfection before callousness on such a scale at any time of the day.
